'The food is exceptional and that includes its ploughman's that comes with fine home-made pork pie. If Melton Mowbray is the only area allowed to claim rights to the pie then the Red Lion should also be given legal status under the EU 'protected-name scheme' as the best place in England to consume your pie with a pint.'

'but it's dinner time and there's a grub pub to visit in nearby Stathern where the Rutland Inn Company has opened The Red Lion. Here pasta comes with mussels, grilled squid and white wine and saffron vierge, and your white wine in a rustic pail for a cooler. Nice touch. I'm liking Lincolnshire's take on tradition.'
